– световая карта-инсталляция Камы от истока до впадения в Волгу;
– подводный мир Камы в виде 300 метрового мурала с “водной” подсветкой и артовой трансформаторной подстанцией;

___________________________________________________________________________

The concept for the improvement of the new section of the Kama River embankment in Perm is not just about updating the walking area; it is part of the large‑scale “Green Ring” project, which aims to create a unified water and green framework for the city. Its main goal is to restore the ecological balance of the river valleys and to create comfortable public spaces for residents and visitors of Perm. In 2025, a section from the Rechnik shopping center to the territory of the Motovilikha plants was opened; its length was about 1.3 km. After a large‑scale renovation, it became one of the attractions — a place for walks, encounters with the river, and the starting point of the city’s visitor route. Its total length is now about four kilometres and is one of the longest in Russia.

Several key ideas were taken into account when developing the concept:

  • Unity with nature. The space should be seamlessly integrated into the landscape, preserving its natural visual and ecological features.
  • Multifunctionality. The embankment is conceived as a place for various types of activity: walks, sports, children’s recreation, and cultural events.
  • Accessibility for all. Conditions have been provided for people with limited mobility: tactile paving, map symbols, accessible entrances to the pavilions.
  • Safety and comfort. Lighting and video surveillance systems have been designed, along with convenient access points to the water.
  • Integration with the surrounding environment. The space should be connected to other green areas in the city – the valleys of the small rivers Yegoshikha and Danilikha, and Chernyaevsky Forest.

The Kama River embankment lighting project is a continuation of the work to develop the lighting and colour environment of Perm within the framework of the city’s lighting master plan developed by our team. The new embankment is one of the city’s key public spaces and the starting point of a new visitor route. Our task was not just to illuminate individual elements of the embankment, but to create a unified lighting route and translate the natural image of the Kama into the language of light.

We took part in shaping the evening appearance of the retaining walls along the lower promenade section of the embankment and designed several objects along the route:

– a light map‑installation of the Kama River from its source to its confluence with the Volga;

– the underwater world of the Kama in the form of a 100‑meter mural with “water‑based” lighting and an art‑style transformer substation;

– architectural and artistic lighting of the Kommunalny Bridge.

This is how the embankment came into being — different, yet inspired by the Kama and its underwater world. We didn’t transfer a single lighting technique from one object to another – we transferred one story between them. It was important to us that, despite their decorative nature, all the lighting installations worked and remained relevant in all seasons.

The Kama River Map – a river that unites

The Kama is not just a geographical feature. It is a river that, over a distance of 1,805 kilometers, from its source to its confluence with the Volga, connects cities, territories, cultures, and histories. The Kama is especially important for Perm: the city was literally shaped by the river; it stretches along it for almost 60 kilometers, and the river determines not only its geography but also its terrain, panoramas, and the character of the urban environment. The artistic image of the installation refers to the Kama through its length and its connection to the cities.

The changing environment of the Kama River and its constancy form the basis of the lighting concept. Four seasonal scenarios with natural hues change the mood of the unchanging object. Thanks to this, the visual state of the installation is constantly transforming. The identity of the cities is manifested on the river as a visual trace, and the dynamics of form and light reflect the flow of water, the continuous passage of time, and the development of urban life.

As a result, the lighting solution transforms from a separate visual technique into a full‑fledged tool of architectural perception. Light adds a temporal dimension to a static object: the same composition can be perceived differently throughout the year.

The metal outline of the river is mounted with a carefully calculated offset from the wall surface. Thousands of RGB LED pixels form a dynamic light wave along the entire length of the object, creating a visual effect of water flowing. Flood lighting along the wall with RGBW spotlights further emphasizes the scale of the composition. To achieve perfect uniformity of light, as well as to prevent sharp burns and the “teeth” effect, the key stage was the precise calculation of the pixel pitch and the distance from the wall.

All technical infrastructure, including engineering equipment, power supplies, switching elements, and cable routes, is hidden behind volumetric parts with city names. Thanks to this, the engineering solution is not just disguised but organically integrated into the overall architectural concept of the art object.

A mural featuring fish and “aquatic” lighting.

The location’s theme is the life of the river underwater. On the 100‑meter‑long mural depicting more than 30 species of fish found in the Kama — bream, perch, sterlet, taimen, pike… — a lighting effect of “aquatic” shimmer is used — a rare solution that has no analogues in terms of scale in outdoor lighting. The light shimmers resemble movement, waves, and sun glints that extend into the underwater depths.

Special linear RGBW fixtures with a dynamic optical system create the effect of water movement. The speed of movement and the direction of the “waves” can be adjusted via control. Fish images interact with the moving light, and the flat architectural surface transforms into something akin to a living underwater space. It is important that the connection with the Kama is created not only by the depiction of its inhabitants. It is formed through color, movement, rhythm, and the nature of the light. The person does not find themselves in front of a decorative wall, but rather as if inside an aquatic environment — there is a sense of depth and the movement of a current.

The Artov Transformer Substations – Light from the Depths

On the promenade, next to the artistic installations, there turned out to be a quite utilitarian element of the city’s infrastructure — a transformer substation. It was impossible to simply “miss” it. So the question arose of how to integrate it into the overall landscaping and make it a part of the space.

We continued the theme of the Kama River, which was established in other elements of the promenade. Images of underwater creatures appeared on the fences, and the warm, almost amber‑like, white light is perceived as if it were reaching them from the depths of the river. The light here is deliberately calmer. It does not compete with other objects, but creates the feeling that the image is born from the depths of the river.

All the finishing elements were prepared for production, manufactured at MT Electro's own production facility. The technological laser cutting is based on manual labor and the original idea of our designers. The artist manually created a story from the life of Kama, tracing the river bottom and giving each fish in the shoal its own character – from dreamy to serious. This author's handwriting has been digitized. To meet the tight deadlines and preserve the individuality of the design, the designer used parametric vectorization, linking software (Illustrator, AutoCAD, Grasshopper, and Rhinoceros) into a seamless chain for direct output to the milling equipment.

Thus, the technical object acquired its own role in the overall composition and became part of the unified evening image of the embankment.

Kommunalny Bridge

The Kommunalny Bridge operates on a different scale within the city. While most of the embankment’s features are perceived by people in close proximity, the bridge becomes part of the city’s panorama.

It connects the two banks of the Kama River and simultaneously links the embankment with the overall silhouette of Perm. We approached the architectural lighting of the bridge in a restrained manner to fit into the overall concept of the project and added accents to the road surface, which operates at a different level of object perception.

A unified lighting route

Despite the differences between the objects, the project is not based on the mechanical repetition of a single lighting technique. For each space, a unique way to convey the idea of the Kama has been found: in some cases through the movement of lines, in others through the dynamics of waves, and in yet others through imagery, seasonal color changes, or interaction with the city panorama.

What unites them is not the shape of the light fixture or a single effect, but the overall lighting drama.

This is precisely what made it possible to implement the project as a continuation of the Perm lighting master plan: individual objects function independently, but at the same time become part of a larger system for shaping the city’s evening appearance.

Thus, lighting solutions become an extension of Kama and part of the evolving Perm.
