The arena’s expressive volumetric and planning solution sets it apart in the city’s panorama compared to Russian counterparts. Its architectural appearance is based on bionic motifs: streamlined forms and a parametric facade in a terracotta‑copper palette allude to the unique nature of the Perm Region, conveying the image of the ripe fruits of the coniferous forests of the Kama region — the cedar cone.

During the day, the visual image of the object is continuously transformed: sunlight, gliding over the volumetric rhomboid “petals,” constantly changes the depth and geometry of the shadows on the building’s shell. This natural scenario reveals the complex plasticity of the facade: the edges of the modules are either clearly defined under direct rays or softly dissolve in the penumbra, imitating the natural texture of a living cedar cone. In the concept of the arena’s night image, we sought to recreate and enhance this dynamic effect of the natural dynamics of sunlight across the terracotta‑copper palette of the facade. Through lighting design, we sought to take up this baton from nature, ensuring that the parametric structure of the facade retains its volume, depth, and plasticity in the dark.

The main task of the lighting solution is to create a recognizable natural image, meeting the large‑scale, status‑oriented purpose of the dominant element. The architectural and artistic lighting solution we have developed is based on an accent solution: behind each facade “petal” there are spotlights with upward‑directed light, which precisely illuminate the edges of the upper modules. The light makes each plane of the module work autonomously. This allows not only to emphasize the tectonics of the facade in static conditions but also to generate complex, individual light movement scenarios that reflect the natural character of the object.

The concept also предусматривает the integration of individual lighting elements into the facade structure – large 70‑centimetre pixels with matte diffusers, the shape of which precisely duplicates the geometry of the structural cassettes. Metaphorically, this technique interprets the image of morning dew.

During the development process, we focused on creating a system for concealed mounting and integrating the equipment into the parametric facade. All lighting equipment is completely hidden behind the facade “petals”: the lighting fixtures do not disrupt the daytime appearance of the building and remain invisible to the observer, manifesting themselves solely through the light flux. A special stage in the design was finding the integration node for a large‑format 70‑centimetre pixel. We aimed to ensure that the lighting module is perceived as an integral part of the architecture. A unified intelligent control system makes it possible to implement complex scenarios by flexibly changing the content of the facade.

Technologically, the most challenging task was integrating the media screen. A standard cabinet solution would inevitably destroy the bionic structure and the visual lightness of the facade. As an innovative alternative, we developed a unit that provides a smooth transition from a discrete pixel module to a monolithic screen module. As the proximity to the screen area increases, the pixel modules integrated into the facade casings proportionally expand in size, transforming into a dense media matrix. In parallel with this, the angle of opening of the “petals” themselves is adjusted algorithmically: the geometry of the panels gradually evens out, forming a single plane in the content transmission zone.

This engineering solution made it possible to completely eliminate perspective distortions and gaps in the transmitted image. As a result, the digital structure does not dominate the architecture but subordinates to it, preserving the original plasticity and integrity of the bionic facade.

The developed method of end‑to‑end integration proves that multimedia technologies can be not an alien overlay but a natural continuation of a building’s complex lighting architecture. The project demonstrates a fundamentally new approach to shaping the lighting identity of large sports arenas: the media facade and the architecture here do not compete for primacy but form a technologically and aesthetically indivisible synthesis.

Our lighting design concept shows how complex parametric architecture can become the foundation for a new lighting identity of a sports facility: the light here reveals its structure, continues its natural metaphor, and transforms the architecture into a living, changing urban image.
