— проанализировала архитектуру моста и его городской контекст;
— построила 3D-модель сооружения по исходным чертежам;
— разработала концепцию освещения;
— создала фотореалистичные визуализации и видео световых сценариев;
— выполнила светотехнические расчёты и подбор оборудования;
— разработала конструктивные решения крепления приборов;
— разработала электротехнический раздел рабочей документации;
— выполнила строительно-монтажные и пусконаладочные работы;

_______________________________________________________________
The Volga Bridge in Rybinsk is not just an engineering structure, but the main silhouette and symbol of the city. Its history is full of drama: construction began in 1938, was interrupted by the war, frozen for many years, and resumed only in 1956. Opened in 1963, the bridge forever changed the appearance of Rybinsk. Today, the panorama of the embankment, the mighty flow of the Volga, the domes of the Transfiguration Cathedral, and the monumental arches form a single, iconic view from a postcard.
Folk legend has dubbed the bridge the “Rybinsk seagull” due to the elegant silhouette of the arches hovering above the water. We heard this metaphor. Our concept is based on revealing the image of the seagull through light. Our goal is not just to illuminate the structure, but to bring to light what is already inherent in its architecture and meaning, transforming the familiar daytime image into a striking nighttime dominant.
Our approach is built on the interplay of light and shadow. We don’t illuminate the elements in total, but rather carefully select the main elements, leaving the secondary ones in the dark. This creates volume, depth, and drama. Soft, warm white light plastically outlines the contours of the spans, making the soaring silhouette the main focus in the nighttime landscape.
This is how the concept of “Gull Flight over the Volga” was born. It’s not a literal depiction of a bird, nor is it a decorative stylization; rather, it’s an attempt to convey the very feeling of flight: the lightness of the structures, the dynamism of the arches, the freedom above the water, and the true scale of the great river.
Light as an extension of the historic city
Rybinsk has preserved a rare integrity of its historic center from the 19th to the early 20th century. The historic neighborhoods, the embankment, the cathedral, and the Volga River form a unified urban ensemble, of which the Volga Bridge is a part. In such an environment, light cannot exist on its own — it must work in harmony with the city’s architecture.
Therefore, in the everyday scenario, we chose a restrained palette of white light with warm and neutral shades. Their combination makes the evening appearance of the bridge more voluminous and harmonizes with the colour scheme of the bridge itself, the atmosphere of the city, and the artistic lighting of the temple. All the scenarios are concise, well‑thought‑out, and built on subtle, complex colour nuances. The bridge fits organically into the historical context, without destroying the established image, but carefully emphasizing it.
We paid special attention to the connection with history. The light display is complemented by a series of text art objects — inscriptions that tell the story of the bridge and its creators. They don’t just decorate the space; they engage in a lively dialogue with the city’s residents and tourists. An expressive grotesque font with Soviet modernist features was chosen for the inscriptions. It accurately reflects the era in which the bridge was built, gently contrasts with the famous historical signs of Rybinsk, and remains perfectly legible from distant angles.
It was important for us to turn the bridge into a living nighttime symbol capable of surprising and transforming. It is intended to become a new focal point, a source of pride for the people of Rybinsk, and a vivid impression for the city’s visitors. This project is the final chord in a long history of restoration. We are giving Rybinsk a new breath of life for its main architectural landmark. As dusk falls, the bridge comes to life, initiating its light dialogue with the city and revealing its meanings to those who are ready to look closely.
The goal was not to add expressiveness to the bridge, but to find it within the bridge itself. The light gradually gathers the individual elements of the structure into a single silhouette above the Volga. The arches become visually lighter, creating a sense of movement and flight. In the reflection of the water, this image finds its continuation. Thus, the familiar daytime view of Rybinsk takes on a second, nighttime life.
From calm urban lighting to a light and music show.
Despite the outward restraint of the everyday scenario, the system has high dynamic variability. RGBW equipment allows you to change the color and intensity of the light, create festive and event‑based scenarios, and synchronize the light with music. In dynamic scenarios, the bridge can “come to life”: the light emphasizes the movement of the arched structures and enhances the image of flight. In festive mode, “Seagull” becomes a bright lighting dominant, and after the event ends, it returns to its calm architectural appearance.
The ceremonial launch of architectural lighting became an independent part of the project, which took place in the presence of the mayor and residents of the city. Light, music and dynamics combined into a single production, in which the engineering structure turned into a living light composition over the Volga River for a few minutes.
One of the key competencies of MT Electro was revealed here: to work with light simultaneously with both architectural volume and to enhance solutions with the language of directing to create an emotional response from people.
Thus, the same object acquired several ways of interacting with the city – from subtle, everyday lighting to large‑scale light and color displays.
1,686 devices – so that the light looks almost weightless.
Behind the concise visual image lies a complex engineering system. More than fifteen hundred linear and spotlight‑type lighting fixtures are installed on the bridge structures. RGBW DMX512 luminaires are used to create dynamic scenarios. The total power is 96.5 kW. The system includes 14 control panels, and the total length of the cable lines is 15 km.
The equipment has an IP67 protection rating and is designed for year‑round operation at temperatures ranging from −45 to +45 °C.
In the project, it was important not only to achieve the required lighting effect but also to integrate the equipment into the existing bridge structure as delicately as possible. The lamps had to remain virtually invisible during the day while providing the necessary expressiveness at night..
From the drawing to the first light show — 4.5 months.
The full project cycle was completed in record time – 4.5 months from pre‑project analysis to the grand launch show. The project partners were Rostelecom and Russmart.
During this time, the MT Electro team:
— analysed the bridge’s architecture and its urban context;
— built a 3D model of the structure based on the original drawings;
— developed a lighting concept;
— created photorealistic visualisations and video lighting scenarios;
— carried out lighting calculations and selected equipment.
— developed design solutions for mounting devices;
— developed the electrical engineering section of the working documentation;
— carried out construction, installation, and commissioning work;
— developed and presented a light and music show.
It is fundamentally important for us that the project did not end at the stage of the lighting engineering solution. We designed not only the lighting system – we designed what the city should have felt when it was turned on.
A new night for a familiar city.
After the lighting was turned on, the Volzhsky Bridge took on a new role in the city panorama of Rybinsk. It didn’t become an alien light object and didn’t lose its connection to the historical center. On the contrary, the familiar architecture appeared in a new way in the dark. “Seagull” became a continuation of the bridge’s daytime image in the nighttime environment.
The light didn’t change the structure. It helped to reveal its character.
And now, as evening falls over the Volga, the bridge’s arches once again gather into a familiar silhouette — only now this silhouette exists not only in the city’s memory, but also in its nighttime space.
“Seagull” is flying over the Volga.
