"Five Minutes and I'm Out"
Lighting design for a cosmetics store. Completed project.
The idea grew out of the packaging. Cosmetics come to us wrapped in foil and metallised plastic, promising a change that happens somewhere at the cellular level. I brought that outside and made it visible: enlarged "cells" appeared on the wall, and the palette was set by violet and turquoise — the colours of the galaxy and of new technology.
A cosmetics store works differently from any other shop. Here a person doesn't only look at the shelf. She picks up a tester, applies the product, walks to the mirror and studies herself. The decision to buy is made there, at the mirror, not at the display. So the lighting had to work at two addresses at once — showing the product and showing the girl herself.
The ambient light is built from continuous luminous lines: 46 metres of Arlight SL-ROUND-D60 round suspended profile with a volumetric opal diffuser. There are deliberately no point sources in the ambient layer. A point source on foil or gloss produces a hard specular highlight that burns out the label and makes the product unreadable. An extended luminous tube reflects in metal as a soft elongated band: it reveals the curve of the bottle and shows that the material is metal. The foil that started this project appears not as a finish, but in the reflections.
Above the merchandise, 40 Arlight LGD-GERA-2TR-R55-10W track fixtures with a 24° beam work from 29 metres of two-circuit track. The narrow beam gives a pool of light with a clear edge on the shelf. The difference in illuminance — 750–1,070 lx on the product against 180–500 lx in the aisles — is the wayfinding system of the store. The eye chooses the brighter surface on its own, and the customer reaches the display before she has read what is written on it.
Colour rendering is zoned, and this is visible directly on the calculation plan. CRI 95 in the main sales area, the lounge zone and the testing surface; CRI 85 where the sheet masks are displayed. A mask is sold in a sealed pack, and nobody assesses its colour on the skin. But where a girl applies a product and looks at herself, red is the first thing to fail at a low index: skin loses its undertone and looks tired, while lipstick and foundation stop matching what they will look like outdoors. RT-A168-10mm 24V Day4000 CRI98 tape was selected for that requirement. A single colour temperature of 4,000 K holds the cool palette in its true colour and does not turn skin grey, as happens at 5,500–6,000 K.
The "Pasta in Space" mirrors were developed specifically for this project. They became a recognisable art object in the city and the visual face of the store: people photograph them, they circulate on social media, and the brand identity works well beyond the shop floor. But they are also a working component of the lighting system. The illumination is built into the mirror and lights the face rather than the back of the head. Under ceiling light alone, a girl at the mirror shadows herself and judges the result in her own shadow — foundation reads patchy, and shadows appear under the eyes that aren't there. Light from the plane of the mirror removes that completely. It switches independently of the main sales floor lighting, and the calculation includes a dedicated 0.5 × 0.5 m surface for this point with a CRI 95 requirement. Here the mirror is at once an art object, a carrier of brand identity, a functional luminaire, a product-testing tool and the closing argument of the sale.
The entire linear system runs at 24 V. Twelve drivers in four ratings — 250, 200, 150 and 100 W, 2,150 W in total against a 1,474 W load, a 68 % utilisation with more than a third in reserve. I deliberately avoided a single central supply: short low-voltage runs hold their voltage, and the failure of one driver takes down one circuit rather than the whole floor mid-trading. Ten lighting groups in total, five independent feeds on the track. Installed load 1,874 W, roughly 12.7 W/m².
This is not an interior with lighting added afterwards. The store was designed from the light and around it. The light shows the product, shows the person and shows the architecture — as one coherent decision, not in turn.
