MARSALI HOOP II is a ring luminaire that extends the MARSALI design system using the serial HOOP II lighting platform. Its defining elements are intersecting panels made of satin-finished acrylic. They transform a luminous ring into a three-dimensional graphic object, creating an interplay of light, tonal transitions and shadow while partially shielding the luminous surface from direct view. The structure follows a kit-of-parts principle: the lighting body and decorative panels can be modified and combined for each project. This makes it possible to create rings of different diameters and body heights, vary the rhythm, density and finish of the panels, and develop the system into extended curvilinear compositions. MARSALI HOOP II retains the functional capabilities of HOOP II, including high-quality white light, dimming and integration with lighting controls, while gaining an individual sculptural identity. A sample manufactured in July 2026 demonstrates the decorative, structural and lighting potential of the concept.
MARSALI HOOP II is a suspended ring luminaire developed within MDM-LIGHT’s TRENDS project. The model continues the MARSALI design system previously implemented in linear luminaires, but transfers its principles to a different typology: the serial HOOP II luminous ring. This application is dedicated exclusively to the new ring version and does not repeat the previously presented family.
The project began with the task of giving a familiar ring luminaire an individual sculptural identity without abandoning a technically developed lighting platform. HOOP II provides the functional foundation: uniform downward light, a high colour rendering index, multiple diameters and power options, different colour temperatures, dimming and integration with lighting control systems. MARSALI adds a new structural and decorative layer to this foundation.
Intersecting panels of satin-finished acrylic are arranged around the ring body. Their rhythm creates a three-dimensional structure that changes according to the viewing angle. From the front, the geometry of the ring remains clearly legible. As the viewer moves around the object, depth, intersections and the alternation of transparent and denser areas become more prominent. Light interacts with the satin acrylic surface, creating soft transitions, reflections and shadows.
The panels primarily perform a decorative and form-defining function. At the same time, they partially restrict a direct view of the luminous surface from selected directions and operate as spatial baffles. This effect does not replace a project-specific lighting calculation, but it helps combine the expressive character of the object with visual comfort.
The central feature of MARSALI HOOP II is its kit-of-parts principle. The luminous body and the system of decorative panels are treated as interconnected yet variable elements. By changing the ring diameter, body height, spacing, number, shape and finish of the panels, the system can generate objects of different scales and characters, ranging from a restrained graphic luminaire to a large spatial sculpture.
The constructive principle is not limited to ring geometry. The same system of intersecting panels may be developed along extended curvilinear bodies, forming long luminous compositions for lobbies, atriums, public passages and other architectural spaces. MARSALI HOOP II therefore becomes more than a single decorative modification; it serves as the starting point for a family of bespoke solutions.
For architects and designers, the system provides a way to adapt the luminaire to the scale of the room, its finishing materials, brand palette and spatial composition. Customisation may include dimensions, proportions, height, density of the decorative rhythm and the visual transparency of the object. At the same time, using a serial lighting platform makes it possible to retain predictable lighting characteristics and reduce the amount of development compared with creating a completely new luminaire.
MARSALI HOOP II is intended for interiors in which a luminaire must provide functional illumination and establish a strong visual identity. Suitable applications include business-centre and hotel lobbies, offices, meeting rooms, restaurants, waiting areas, retail spaces, atriums and representative public interiors. Suspended installation allows the object to define zones and form compositions at different heights.
Each new configuration requires engineering verification of the panel geometry and attachment method, weight distribution, rigidity of the ring or curved body, suspension points, thermal conditions, power-supply placement and maintenance access. Luminous flux, power, colour temperature, control protocol and other parameters must be selected according to the requirements of the specific location.
A physical MARSALI HOOP II sample was manufactured in July 2026. It uses satin-finished acrylic panels installed around a HOOP II ring luminaire. The sample demonstrates the central principle of the system: a serial lighting platform gains an individual form through a repeatable decorative and structural element.
Leonid Bordachenkov is both the designer and design engineer of MARSALI HOOP II. Combining these roles allowed the decorative concept to be considered simultaneously in terms of form, assembly and production feasibility.
The value of the project lies in its ability to generate visually different luminaires on a shared technological foundation. MARSALI HOOP II transforms the ring from a universal geometry into a configurable architectural object and turns the decorative structure into a complete design tool.
